Custom Tile Installation Cost in Orlando: What to Expect

Every week someone calls and asks what tile installation costs in Orlando. The honest answer is that it depends on what is under your current floor, where the tile is going, and how you want it to look when we are done. That answer is frustrating if you want a number over the phone, so this post breaks the number down instead.

One thing up front. We are a family-owned company with more than 20 years installing tile in Central Florida homes, licensed and insured, and we are usually not the cheapest bid you will get. We explain below why we think that protects you, and we give real ballpark ranges so you can budget properly before we ever set foot in your home.

What actually drives the cost of custom tile work

Tile pricing is mostly labor, and labor follows difficulty. Six things move the price on almost every job we quote.

Demolition and what we find underneath

Most projects start by removing something: old tile, laminate, vinyl, or carpet. Tearing out ceramic that was mortared to a concrete slab is slow, dusty work, and the old thinset left behind has to be ground flat before anything new goes down. A tear-out that takes half a day in one house can take two full days next door.

We also do not know what is under the old floor until it comes up. Slab cracks, moisture issues, and previous bad installs are common in Orlando homes, and dealing with them properly is part of the job.

Substrate prep and leveling

Large-format tile, meaning anything 12x24 inches and bigger, needs a floor flat to roughly 1/8 inch over 10 feet. Very few slabs meet that on their own. Getting there can mean grinding down high spots, patching low ones, or pouring self-leveling underlayment across the whole room.

Prep is the least visible line on a quote and the most important one. Skip it and you get lippage, hollow spots, and cracked tiles within a few years. Much of the price difference between competing bids lives right here.

Waterproofing for showers and wet areas

Tile and grout are not waterproof. In a shower, the waterproofing is a membrane system behind and beneath the tile: a properly sloped pan, sealed corners, treated seams, and a correctly built niche and bench, with a flood test before any tile goes down. Done right, it adds real material and labor cost. Done wrong, you find out two or three years later when the wall behind the tile has rotted.

This is the single most common corner cut in cheap shower bids, because nobody can see it once the tile goes up.

Material grade

Ceramic, porcelain, and natural stone all install differently. Dense porcelain is harder to cut than ceramic and wears through blades. Natural stone like marble or travertine needs sealing, careful handling, and often a white thinset so the stone does not discolor. Handmade and encaustic tiles vary slightly in size from piece to piece and take more time to lay well.

Material grade also drives the tile budget itself. Basic ceramic can run a few dollars per square foot, quality porcelain somewhat more, and natural stone or specialty tile well beyond that.

Pattern complexity

A straight lay is the fastest install. Herringbone, chevron, diagonal, and basketweave layouts multiply the cuts, raise waste (plan on 10 to 15 percent extra tile), and demand more layout time so the lines stay true across the room. Mosaic sheets bring their own fussiness: every sheet has to be flattened and aligned so the joints between sheets disappear.

Trim and edge detail

Every exposed tile edge needs a finished treatment: bullnose, a metal edge profile, or a mitered corner. Showers add niches, benches, curbs, and shelves, and each one is a small waterproofing and finishing project of its own. These details are where a job starts looking custom instead of builder-grade, and they take real time to get right.

Ballpark price ranges for Orlando tile installation

Here are working ranges for labor and standard prep in the Orlando area. Treat them as starting points, not quotes. Every job is priced individually after we see the space.

• Standard straight-lay floor tile: roughly $7 to $12 per square foot
• Pattern work (herringbone, diagonal, mosaics): roughly $10 to $18 per square foot
• Shower and wet-area work: roughly $18 to $35 per square foot, with complete walk-in shower rebuilds commonly landing between $5,000 and $15,000 depending on size, materials, and detail work

The tile itself is a separate budget. Heavy demolition, major leveling, or slab repair can add to any of these ranges, which is why we quote in person instead of guessing over the phone.

Why the cheapest bid usually costs more later

When one bid comes in far below the others, the tile is rarely what got cheaper. The scope did. Leveling gets skipped, crack isolation disappears, the waterproofing gets thinner or vanishes, and the trim details get simplified. The floor looks fine on day one either way, which is what makes the low bid tempting.

The bill arrives later. A floor laid over an unprepped slab telegraphs every crack and hump through the tile. A shower without real waterproofing soaks the framing behind it, and the fix is demolition of nearly new tile, drywall and framing repair, sometimes mold remediation, and then the full rebuild you should have gotten the first time. Paying twice is the expensive way to buy a shower.

Our position is simple: we would rather lose a bid than cut prep or waterproofing. You get what you pay for in this trade, and we say that as people who have been called in to redo the cheap version more than once.
